About Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve

Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve, located in southern Lithuania, is the country's first biosphere reserve, established to protect one of the most important wetland ecosystems in the region. It encompasses Lake Žuvintas, Lithuania's shallowest lake, surrounded by extensive reed beds, marshes, wet meadows, and forests. The reserve covers an area of approximately 17,000 hectares and includes aquatic, semi-aquatic, and terrestrial habitats. Due to its rich biodiversity, especially its significance as a breeding and stopover site for numerous rare and endangered bird species, it was designated a Ramsar wetland site and recognized internationally for conservation. Key bird species include the black stork, aquatic warbler, and various species of ducks, geese, and waders. Besides ornithology, the reserve supports diverse flora, including rare orchids and aquatic plants, and fauna like beavers, otters, and amphibians. Visitors can explore the area via designated birdwatching hides, observation towers, and trails that offer immersive experiences in pristine wetland nature. The reserve also hosts a Zoological Research Station and an Environmental Education Center, enhancing scientific study and visitor understanding. Hiking, birdwatching, nature photography, and environmental education are primary activities. The tranquil landscape of marshes and reeds, punctuated by wooden walkways and observation points, makes Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve a unique destination for nature lovers and researchers alike, emphasizing wetland ecosystem preservation and sustainable visitation.
